Minimum age
Medical tests
Minimum flight experience
Succeed in passing a theoretical and a practical skill test
Obtain a restricted radio telephony certificate

Minimum age

To obtain a private pilot licence, you need to be at least 17 years. You can however apply for a learning permit as from the age of 16.

Medical tests

To obtain a private pilot licence, you need to be physically and mentally fit. Therefor you need to pass a medical exam.

Having reached the minimum age and passing these medical tests are the only two conditions to receive a learning permit with which you can start your practical lessons.

Minimum Flight Experience

A learning permit enables you to perform dual control flights with a licensed instructor and solo flights with the permission of your instructor.

To obtain a private pilot licence, you legally need minimum 40 flight hours. However our experience has taught us that most people, with no previous flight experience, need between 50 and 60 hours.

Pass a theoretical exam and a practical skill examination

Before you participate in the practical examination you will have to succeed the theoretic examination.

This theoretical exam includes the following subjects:

  1. General Air Regulations
  2. Legislation for helicopters
  3. Aerodynamic for helicopters
  4. Engines
  5. Instruments
  6. Navigation
  7. Meteorology
  8. Operational Procedures

During the practical skills test, which you need to pass with an examinator registered with the Belgian Aviation Authorities, you need to prove that:

on the ground you possess the necessary knowledge on the specifications of the used helicopter.
in the air you can perform all the normal and exceptional performances and that you can follow the procedures established by the Air Traffic Control Services.
you can prepare and correctly execute a navigation exercise.

Restricted radio-telephony certificate

You will need this permit to use the on board radio. For this you will have to pass a test during which you need to proof your knowledge of standard radio procedures. The communication is done in English according to specific standard expressions. A standard knowledge of the English language enables you to pass this test.

Organization of the pilot training

Practical skills training

R22-2.jpg (6816 bytes) We use the Robinson R22 Beta for the in-flight training, this two seat helicopter has a two bladed rotor and a combustion engine of 160 hp. The reliability of this helicopter combined with the low operating cost make it an excellent training helicopter.

The training is done in three phases:

  1. General Flying
  2. In this first phase you familiarize yourself with the operating systems of the helicopter. You learn to hover close to the ground, straight level flight, ascending, descending, turning and taking off and landing.

  3. Special Flights
  4. During this second phase you learn to execute precision approaches in auto-rotation (in case of an engine breakdown), to take off in high power conditions. You also learn to choose a landing site in unfamiliar surroundings and how to approach such a landing site.

  5. Navigation
  6. During this third phase your instructor will teach you how to navigate by observation and on assessments, how to use navigational instruments, how to use the radio, how to plan your flight and your fuel consumption. During this phase you will also execute solo flights, these start with a small navigation exercise in which departure- and arrival point are one and the same site followed by a larger navigation exercise in which you land on an unknown airport or heliport.

Theoretical training

The preparation of the theoretical examination can be done individually or you can enroll in a course organized by HSB. This course consists of 100 hours, the frequency and the dates of these lessons are decided together with the students. Candidates who decide to prepare themselves individually for the exam can of course contact HSB for assistance should they have problems.

During the entire formation the instructor will concentrate on the teaching of the mandatory exercises necessary for succeeding the examination.

Our instructors are fluent in both French and Dutch so you are assured that you can train in your own language.

All the required material, like courses, navigational equipment, maps, etc. can be provided by HSB.
